Heart scan may help doctors know when to remove breathing tube

NCT ID NCT07075926

First seen Nov 01, 2025 · Last updated May 20, 2026 · Updated 28 times

Summary

This study looks at whether a simple heart ultrasound can help doctors decide when patients in the intensive care unit (ICU) are ready to stop using a breathing machine. About 50 adults on ventilators will get a heart scan within 2 hours of meeting weaning criteria, then be monitored for 24 hours. The goal is to see if heart function measurements can predict who will breathe successfully on their own, potentially reducing complications and hospital stays.
