Could your genes make you prone to broken heart syndrome?

NCT ID NCT04513054

First seen May 12, 2026 · Last updated Jun 22, 2026 · Updated 11 times

Summary

This study aims to find out if genetics play a role in who gets broken heart syndrome (Takotsubo cardiomyopathy), a condition that mimics a heart attack and is often triggered by intense stress. Researchers will collect blood samples from 700 people diagnosed with the condition in Scotland and analyze their DNA. The goal is to identify genetic variations that may increase susceptibility, which could also have implications for family members.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

What this could lead to

If successful, this could help identify people at higher risk for broken heart syndrome and possibly inform future screening or prevention strategies.

What could go wrong

This is an observational genetic study, not a treatment trial. It may not find clear genetic links, and any findings would need years of further research before practical use.

Conditions
