Gel nails may fool oxygen monitors, study warns

NCT ID NCT06101628

First seen Jun 11, 2026 · Last updated Jun 13, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study looked at whether gel nail polish changes the accuracy of pulse oximeters, which measure oxygen levels in the blood. 162 healthy women had gel polish applied to one finger and left the other finger bare. Oxygen and heart rate readings were then compared between the two fingers. The goal is to help nurses and doctors get correct readings, especially before surgery.
