Free fruits and veggies for transplant kids: a recipe for better health?
NCT ID NCT06953336
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study tested whether giving monthly fruit and vegetable vouchers to young kidney transplant patients (ages 2-25) who struggle with food insecurity could improve their diet and health. Nineteen participants received an EBT card loaded with funds for six months. Researchers measured satisfaction, food security, and dietary changes before and after the program.

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only, not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- Fruit and vegetable voucher program (EBT card)
- What this could lead to
- If successful, this program could improve diet quality and reduce food insecurity in young kidney transplant patients, potentially leading to better long-term health outcomes.
- What could go wrong
- This is a very small, completed study with only 19 participants, so results may not apply to larger or different groups. The program only addresses food access, not other factors affecting transplant success.
