IBS sufferers tested: are fructans friend or foe?
NCT ID NCT04830410
First seen Nov 25, 2025 · Last updated May 23, 2026 · Updated 26 times
Summary
This study looked at whether fructans, a type of carbohydrate found in foods like wheat, onion, and garlic, make IBS symptoms better or worse. 65 adults with diarrhea-predominant IBS took either fructans or a placebo, and researchers measured changes in symptom severity, gut gas, and gut bacteria. The goal was to see if small amounts of fructans could be helpful without causing discomfort.
