Can arm exercises keep aging bones strong?
NCT ID NCT07831031
First seen Sep 21, 2026 · Last updated Sep 21, 2026
Summary
Researchers are testing whether a six-month supervised exercise program can improve forearm muscle strength and support radial bone health in older adults living in nursing homes. Thirty-four participants are assigned to either an exercise group or a control group. The exercise group does forearm-focused resistance and upper-extremity weight-bearing exercises three times a week for 24 weeks. The study measures handgrip strength, forearm muscle strength, and bone mineral density in the radius bone.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only, not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- a supervised forearm-focused resistance and upper-extremity weight-bearing exercise program
- What this could lead to
- If it works, this could offer a low-cost way to help older adults in care homes keep arm strength and slow bone loss in the forearm.
- What could go wrong
- This is a small pilot study with 34 participants, so any benefits may be modest and may not apply to other groups. Exercise carries some risk of strain or injury, especially in frail older adults.
