Sham surgery showdown: is microdiscectomy a real fix for sciatica?

NCT ID NCT07418944

First seen Feb 21, 2026 · Last updated May 23, 2026 · Updated 12 times

Summary

This study aims to find out if a common back operation, microdiscectomy, truly relieves sciatica leg pain better than a pretend (placebo) surgery. It will involve 122 adults with a herniated disc whose leg pain hasn't improved after at least six weeks of non-surgical treatments. Participants will be randomly assigned to receive either the real operation or a sham procedure, and neither they nor their regular doctors will know which they got, allowing for a fair comparison of pain relief and recovery.
