Study aims to boost Quit-Smoking success with extended medication timing

NCT ID NCT03262662

Summary

This study tested whether taking the smoking cessation medication varenicline for four weeks before quitting (instead of the standard one week) helps people quit smoking more successfully long-term. Researchers enrolled 320 adult smokers who wanted to quit and randomly assigned them to either the standard or extended pre-quit medication schedule. Both groups received counseling and continued medication after their quit date, with success measured through both self-reports and biological tests for up to six months.
