Can estrogen therapy improve cholesterol and blood sugar control in women with low hormone levels?
NCT ID NCT07821086
First seen Sep 15, 2026 · Last updated Sep 16, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
Researchers are studying whether three months of estrogen therapy changes cholesterol levels and insulin sensitivity in women with hypogonadism, a condition where the ovaries produce little or no estrogen. Thirty women aged 18 to 50 will receive estrogen as a pill or skin patch. The team will measure cholesterol, fasting glucose, fasting insulin, and a marker of insulin resistance before treatment and again after three months.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only, not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- estrogen therapy, given as estradiol valerate by mouth or through the skin
- What this could lead to
- If estrogen therapy improves cholesterol and insulin sensitivity, it could support better metabolic monitoring and treatment choices for women with hypogonadism.
- What could go wrong
- This is a small, single-group study with no comparison group, so any changes seen could be due to other factors. Estrogen therapy carries known risks, including blood clots, and is not safe for everyone.
