New trial aims to wipe out hidden leukemia before transplant

NCT ID NCT05554419

First seen Jan 04, 2026 · Last updated Jun 23, 2026 · Updated 38 times

Summary

This Phase 2 trial tests whether combining different chemotherapy drugs can better eliminate residual leukemia cells in patients with acute myeloid leukemia (AML) before they receive a stem cell transplant. About 184 adults aged 18-59 will be assigned to one of four treatment arms, including standard cytarabine alone or combinations with venetoclax, liposomal daunorubicin-cytarabine, or azacitidine. The goal is to see if these combinations lead to a deeper remission (no detectable disease) compared to standard therapy.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

cytarabine, venetoclax, liposome-encapsulated daunorubicin-cytarabine, azacitidine

What this could lead to

If successful, this could point toward more effective ways to eliminate remaining leukemia cells before transplant, potentially improving long-term survival.

What could go wrong

This is an early Phase 2 trial with a small number of participants. The drug combinations may not work better than standard treatment, and side effects like infection or organ damage are possible.
