Doctors try to 'Freeze Time' for bleeding trauma victims in cardiac arrest

NCT ID NCT01042015

Summary

This study tested an emergency procedure for trauma patients whose hearts have stopped from severe bleeding. Doctors rapidly cooled the patient's body with cold saltwater to preserve their organs, allowing surgeons time to stop the bleeding. The patient was then resuscitated and rewarmed using a heart-lung machine. The goal was to improve survival without major brain damage.
