Milk boost for tiniest babies: study tests best way to help preemies grow
NCT ID NCT04284280
First seen May 23, 2026 · Last updated May 23, 2026
Summary
This study looked at whether adding extra nutrients (fortification) to breast milk early on helps extremely preterm babies (born at or before 27 weeks) grow better and avoid a serious gut problem called necrotizing enterocolitis. About 170 infants were split into two groups: one got routine fortification from the start, the other got it only if needed. Researchers tracked growth in the hospital and development at age two.
