Breakfast breakthrough: two sugars better for liver fuel?

NCT ID NCT07476989

First seen Mar 22, 2026 · Last updated May 23, 2026 · Updated 9 times

Summary

This study looks at whether eating a breakfast with two types of carbohydrates—glucose and fructose (found in honey and fruits)—can increase the amount of glycogen stored in the liver. Twelve healthy male athletes will try three different breakfast options (no breakfast, a carb-only breakfast, and a carb breakfast with half fructose) to see which best restores liver glycogen after an overnight fast. The goal is to find the best way to fuel the liver before exercise, which could improve performance and energy levels.
