Expanded access
Not a trial. This treatment can be requested outside a study, case by case, for people who qualify.
Expanded access (paused)
Not a trial. The treatment can normally be requested outside a study, but is unavailable right now.
Expanded access (ended)
Not a trial. The treatment could once be requested outside a study, but no longer can.

Summary

This study develops and tests a digital sleep intervention called Nurturing Sleep for preschoolers (ages 3-5) living in foster care. Foster parents use a smartphone app to learn about sleep hygiene and receive tailored strategies based on their child's sleep challenges. The goal is to improve child sleep and caregiver-child interactions, with potential for nationwide reach.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only, not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance
Nurturing Sleep digital behavioral intervention
What this could lead to
If effective, this digital program could provide a scalable way to improve sleep health for vulnerable children in foster care nationwide.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage study focused on feasibility and acceptability, so results may not generalize widely. The intervention relies on caregiver engagement, which may vary.

Study facts

What this study's own registry entry says, in plain language.

Phase

Not a phased trial

Phase numbers describe drug development. The registry uses this when they do not apply, as it does for trials of devices, procedures or behaviour changes, and for observational studies.

Participants

About 72 people

The number the study aims to enrol. It can still change while the study runs.

Expected to start

Dec 2027

An estimate. Start dates often move.

Expected to finish

Jun 2030

An estimate. End dates often move.

Inclusion Criteria: * Participants are only recruited for Aims 2 (Nurturing Sleep pretest) and 3 (RCT of Nurturing Sleep) of the study and must be a US foster parent of a preschool aged child (36 to 71 months) and have a smartphone. Foster parents will be adults 21 years of age or older, per federal requirements for foster parent licensing. Exclusion Criteria: * Participants will be excluded from the study if they are not English or Spanish speaking, or if the child they are to report on has a serious medical condition or developmental disability that the sleep intervention would not be appropriate for because their medical condition requires more specialized strategies (e.g., cerebral palsy, seizures, autism spectrum disorders). If there is more than one preschool aged child under the foster parent's care, they will implement the intervention and answer study questionnaires based on the child for whom they are most concerned about their sleep.
