Can a sedative shield kidneys during aortic surgery?
NCT ID NCT06958367
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This early-stage trial tests whether the drug dexmedetomidine can reduce acute kidney injury in 78 adults undergoing ascending aortic surgery with a heart-lung machine. Half receive the drug, half get a placebo. The goal is to see if the drug's anti-inflammatory effects help prevent kidney damage.

- What this could lead to
- If it works, this could point toward a way to protect kidneys during heart surgery.
- What could go wrong
- This is a very early Phase 1 trial with only 78 people. It may not show a clear benefit, and results may not apply to all patients.
