Smartwatch AI could spot diabetes clues without needles
NCT ID NCT05482958
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This completed study tested whether a smartwatch, combined with artificial intelligence, could identify digital signs of type 2 diabetes. Researchers gave 210 adults a multisensor watch to track heart rate and other vitals, then analyzed the data with machine learning. The goal was to find patterns linked to diabetes and blood sugar control, potentially leading to simpler, non-invasive monitoring.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only, not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- HOP watch (multisensor smartwatch)
- What this could lead to
- If successful, this could lead to a non-invasive way to monitor diabetes using a smartwatch, helping doctors and patients manage the condition more easily.
- What could go wrong
- This was a small, completed study focused on finding patterns, not testing a treatment. The results may not apply to all patients or lead to a practical tool.
