First seen May 06, 2026 · Last updated Jun 21, 2026 · Updated 9 times

Summary

This study tests custom-designed socks with built-in pressure-relieving elements for women over 55 with metatarsalgia, a common cause of forefoot pain. 180 participants will be randomly assigned to wear the special socks, custom foot orthoses, or a removable toe aligner for six months. Researchers will measure pain, quality of life, and activity levels to see if the socks offer a convenient, personalized solution.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

custom-designed plantar orthotic elements integrated into socks

What this could lead to

If it works, this could offer a simple, personalized sock that reduces foot pain without needing separate insoles or devices.

What could go wrong

This is an early-stage trial with only 180 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. The custom socks might not relieve pain better than existing treatments.
