Blood test may reveal early if lung cancer therapy works
NCT ID NCT03926260
First seen Jan 11, 2026 · Last updated Jun 21, 2026 · Updated 26 times
Summary
This study looked at whether changes in tumor DNA found in the blood (ctDNA) can help doctors know early if treatment is working for people with advanced lung cancer. Researchers took blood samples from 100 patients before treatment and again at 3 and 9 weeks. The goal was to see if ctDNA levels rising or falling matched with tumor shrinkage or growth on scans. If validated, this approach could allow faster treatment adjustments without waiting for standard imaging.

What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
What this could lead to
If successful, this could lead to a simple blood test to quickly tell if lung cancer treatment is working, helping doctors adjust therapy sooner.
What could go wrong
This is a small pilot study, not a treatment trial. The test may not reliably predict outcomes in all patients, and more research is needed before it can be used in practice.
