New pain block after back surgery could cut opioid use

NCT ID NCT06987409

First seen Feb 20, 2026 · Last updated May 01, 2026 · Updated 8 times

Summary

This study tests whether a continuous nerve block placed by the surgeon during back surgery can reduce pain and the need for opioids afterward. About 100 adults having lumbar spine surgery will be randomly assigned to receive either the nerve block with a numbing medicine or a placebo (salt water) for 54 hours after surgery. The goal is to see if this approach improves recovery and reduces long-term pain.
