Mind over back pain: study tests if expectations boost treatment results

NCT ID NCT07507604

First seen Apr 10, 2026 · Last updated May 21, 2026 · Updated 8 times

Summary

This study looks at whether a person's expectations—shaped by watching someone else's experience—can change how much pain relief they get from spinal manipulation. Adults with chronic low back pain will be placed into one of three groups: positive, neutral, or negative expectations. Researchers will measure pain, movement, stress, and blood markers of inflammation before and after treatment to see if mindset affects physical outcomes.
