New radiation technique aims to reduce side effects in rectal cancer treatment

NCT ID NCT02151019

First seen Apr 25, 2026 · Last updated May 31, 2026 · Updated 8 times

Summary

This study compared two radiation methods given before surgery for locally advanced rectal cancer. The goal was to see if intensity modulated radiotherapy (IMRT) causes fewer stomach and bowel side effects than standard 3-D conformal radiotherapy. The study enrolled 94 adults and was stopped early, but the findings may help doctors choose the safer option.
