Old gout drug may keep heart beating steady after valve surgery

NCT ID NCT04870424

First seen Jun 05, 2026 · Last updated Jun 19, 2026 · Updated 3 times

Summary

This study tested whether colchicine, a common gout medication, can prevent new atrial fibrillation and the need for a permanent pacemaker in people undergoing a minimally invasive aortic valve replacement (TAVI). About 200 patients with severe aortic stenosis took either colchicine or a placebo for 30 days after the procedure. The goal was to see if the drug's anti-inflammatory effects could reduce these common complications.
