What the study statuses mean

This study's is highlighted.

Recruitment status, easiest to join first

Recruiting now
This trial is taking on new participants right now.
Not yet recruiting This study
Registered, but not yet taking participants.
By invitation only
Not open to general applications. Only people the study team invites can take part.
Paused
Paused for now. It may or may not start again.
Ongoing
Running, but no longer taking on new participants.
Completed
The trial has finished. Results may not be published yet.
Stopped early
Stopped early, before it reached the end. That can be for many reasons, including safety.
Cancelled
Cancelled before anyone took part.

Expanded access (not trials)

Expanded access
Not a trial. This treatment can be requested outside a study, case by case, for people who qualify.
Expanded access (paused)
Not a trial. The treatment can normally be requested outside a study, but is unavailable right now.
Expanded access (ended)
Not a trial. The treatment could once be requested outside a study, but no longer can.
Approved
The treatment has been approved, so it is available normally rather than through this programme.

Summary

Researchers want to know whether caffeine consumption is linked to irregular heartbeats and daily physical activity in adults with heart failure, reduced left ventricular ejection fraction, and an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD). About 170 participants fill out a one-time questionnaire about coffee and other caffeine sources from the past week. The team then reviews heart rhythm data, heart rate, and activity already recorded by each person's ICD over the prior year. No extra visits, tests, or treatment changes are involved.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only, not medical advice or a prediction.

What this could lead to
If a link appears, it could sharpen advice about coffee and exercise for people living with a defibrillator and weak heart pumping.
What could go wrong
This is an observational questionnaire study, so it can show associations but not cause and effect. People may misremember their caffeine intake, and the findings may not apply to other heart patients.

Show the full entry requirements

Copied word for word from the study's registry entry, so the wording is the study team's rather than ours.

Inclusion Criteria: 1. Written informed consent obtained prior to any study procedure. 2. Age ≥18 years. 3. Left ventricular systolic dysfunction (LVEF \<50%), i.e. HFrEF or HFmrEF, documented on the most recent available transthoracic echocardiogram. 4. Presence of a transvenous implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD), including cardiac resynchronization therapy defibrillators (CRT-D), implanted at least 12 months before the caffeine questionnaire. Exclusion Criteria: 1. Presence of channelopathies. 2. Subcutaneous implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (S-ICD), which does not provide ventricular ectopic beat counters, accelerometer-derived physical activity data or antitachycardia pacing, and therefore cannot generate the primary outcome measure. 3. Inability to complete the study questionnaire on coffee and caffeinated product consumption.
