Gum bug battle: aligner edge design may shift mouth bacteria

NCT ID NCT07533058

First seen Apr 28, 2026 · Last updated Jun 13, 2026 · Updated 12 times

Summary

This study looks at how the edge of a clear aligner at the gumline affects bacteria in the gum groove. 39 people in the final phase of orthodontic treatment will wear aligners with two different edge designs—one covering 2 mm of gum, the other following the gumline exactly. Researchers will measure levels of seven gum-disease bacteria after 4 and 8 weeks to see if one design creates a more bacteria-friendly environment.
