Does longer glucose monitoring help diabetes control? small study halted early

NCT ID NCT03067480

First seen Jan 11, 2026 · Last updated Jun 22, 2026 · Updated 26 times

Summary

This study aimed to see if using a professional continuous glucose monitor (CGM) for 6 months, instead of 3 months, helps people with poorly controlled type 2 diabetes (who don't use insulin) spend more time with healthy blood sugar levels. Only 12 participants were enrolled before the study was stopped early. The CGM was worn for 3 days at a time and recorded sugar levels without showing them to the patient.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

professional continuous glucose monitor (CGM)

What this could lead to

If successful, this could show that longer CGM use helps people with type 2 diabetes better manage their blood sugar without needing insulin.

What could go wrong

This was a very small, early study that was terminated before completion. The results may not be reliable or apply to a broader population.
