Gene sleuths hunt for antibiotic weaknesses in cystic fibrosis lungs

NCT ID NCT04341532

First seen Apr 28, 2026 · Last updated Jun 17, 2026 · Updated 10 times

Summary

This study looked at sputum (mucus coughed up from the lungs) from 83 adults with cystic fibrosis who were hospitalized for a sudden worsening of their lung disease. Researchers used genetic testing to find which antibiotic-resistant bacteria were present and compared those results to how well patients responded to treatment. The goal was to learn how to better choose antibiotics for future lung infections.
