Could a better blood pressure reading save kidneys and hearts?

NCT ID NCT05163158

First seen Mar 18, 2026 · Last updated Jun 22, 2026 · Updated 13 times

Summary

This pilot study tested whether using central blood pressure (measured near the heart) instead of the standard arm cuff helps manage hypertension in 116 people with advanced chronic kidney disease. Participants were randomly assigned to either a central or brachial blood pressure target. The goal was to see if this approach is feasible and might reduce artery stiffness over 12 months. Results will guide a larger trial.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Central blood pressure measurement (device-based intervention)

What this could lead to

If successful, this could show that using central blood pressure readings leads to better blood pressure control and fewer heart and kidney complications in advanced kidney disease patients.

What could go wrong

This is a small pilot study focused on feasibility, not on proving clinical benefits. The approach may not show clear advantages over standard care, and results may not apply to all patients.
