Engineered immune cells take on tough lupus cases
NCT ID NCT07318259
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This early-stage trial tests a new type of CAR-T cell therapy for people with refractory systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), a severe form of the autoimmune disease. The treatment uses a patient's own immune cells, modified to target two proteins (BCMA and CD70) on harmful cells. The study will enroll 18 adults to check safety and see if it can reduce disease activity.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only, not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- BCMA/CD70-targeted CAR-T cells
- What this could lead to
- If successful, this could offer a new treatment option for people with severe lupus that hasn't responded to standard therapies.
- What could go wrong
- This is a very early phase 1 trial with only 18 people, so it's too soon to know if it works. CAR-T therapy can cause serious side effects like cytokine release syndrome.
