Athlete muscle pain meets cannabis: a balm that might beat the burn
NCT ID NCT07733791
First seen Jul 29, 2026 · Last updated Jul 31, 2026 · Updated 2 times
Summary
This trial tests whether adding a topical balm with a 3:1 ratio of CBD to THC to standard oral CBD oil can better relieve chronic muscle pain in athletes. Sixty amateur or professional athletes with pain lasting at least three months will be split into two groups: one taking only oral CBD oil, the other adding the balm twice daily to sore muscles. Researchers will track pain levels, sleep quality, and recovery over 90 days to see if the combination offers extra relief.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only, not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- a topical balm containing a 3:1 ratio of cannabidiol (CBD) to tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), used alongside oral CBD oil
- What this could lead to
- If it works, this could offer athletes a new, non-opioid option for managing stubborn muscle pain and speeding recovery.
- What could go wrong
- This is a small, non-randomized observational study, so results may be influenced by bias. The balm contains THC, which could cause skin irritation or psychoactive effects in some people.
