Can a glowing dye reveal hidden tooth decay?
NCT ID NCT04748913
First seen Aug 07, 2026 · Last updated Aug 07, 2026
Summary
This study tests whether a special light-based scanner, called DIAGNOcam, can better detect early cavities between teeth when used with a dye. Researchers will compare this method to standard X-rays and a visual-tactile exam. The goal is to see if the dye improves the ability to tell whether a cavity has formed a hole (cavitation), which helps decide the best treatment.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only, not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- Near-infrared transillumination with indocyanine green dye (DIAGNOcam)
- What this could lead to
- If successful, this could lead to more accurate, less invasive detection of early cavities, potentially reducing the need for fillings.
- What could go wrong
- The dye may not improve detection enough to be clinically useful, and the study is relatively small, so results may not apply broadly.

Inclusion Criteria: * E1, E2 and D1 proximal carious lesions in permanent posterior teeth (E1: outer half of enamel; E2: inner half of enamel; D1: outer half of dentin) Exclusion Criteria: * estructural abnormalities * visible clinical cavitation * restorations on the proximal surfaces * open contact points * overlapping structures on the X-ray that prevent a clear view of the proximal area
