Blood test could predict cancer worsening in rare blood disorders
NCT ID NCT04942080
First seen Mar 30, 2026 · Last updated Jun 23, 2026 · Updated 18 times
Summary
This study looks at whether changes in the level of a specific gene mutation (CALR) in the blood can help predict when certain blood cancers (myeloproliferative neoplasms) get worse. Researchers will collect blood samples from 260 adults diagnosed between 2006 and 2020 and track mutation levels over time. The goal is to see if these levels can serve as an early warning sign of disease progression, without testing any new treatment.

What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
What this could lead to
If successful, this could help doctors use CALR mutation levels as a warning sign to detect disease worsening earlier in patients with certain blood cancers.
What could go wrong
This is an observational study, not a treatment trial. It may not lead to any change in patient care, and results might not apply to all patients with these conditions.
Conditions
