Math formula could help surgeons cut bone graft waste in tumor surgery
NCT ID NCT07653178
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jul 01, 2026 · Updated 2 times
Summary
This study tests whether a simple mathematical formula, applied to routine CT scans, can accurately predict the size of a bone defect that will be created during surgery to remove a bone tumor. Accurate prediction could help surgeons select the right-sized donor bone graft beforehand, reducing waste and improving efficiency. The study will enroll 40 adults scheduled for bone tumor surgery and compare the formula's estimate to the actual defect measured during the operation.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only, not medical advice or a prediction.
- What this could lead to
- If the formula proves accurate, it could help surgeons select the right-sized bone graft before surgery, reducing waste and improving surgical planning.
- What could go wrong
- This is a small, early-stage validation study. The formula may not be accurate for all defect shapes, and results may not apply to other hospitals or tumor types.
