Not a trial. This treatment can be requested outside a study, case by case, for people who qualify.
Expanded access (paused)
Not a trial. The treatment can normally be requested outside a study, but is unavailable right now.
Expanded access (ended)
Not a trial. The treatment could once be requested outside a study, but no longer can.

Summary

Researchers at the University of Barcelona are testing whether a mouthwash made from bioflavonoids can reduce dental plaque and gum inflammation as effectively as a standard chlorhexidine mouthwash. The trial enrolls 24 adults with at least 20 teeth and no severe gum disease. Participants rinse with each mouthwash for four days while skipping all brushing and flossing, with a 15-day break between the two phases. The study measures plaque buildup and gum inflammation to compare the two rinses.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only, not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance
A mouthwash made from plant-based bioflavonoids, compared with a standard chlorhexidine antiseptic mouthwash.
What this could lead to
If it works, a plant-based rinse could offer an alternative to chlorhexidine for controlling plaque, possibly with fewer side effects like tooth staining or taste changes.
What could go wrong
This is a small, short study of 24 people who stop brushing for four days, so results may not reflect normal daily oral care. Bioflavonoids may not match chlorhexidine's strength, and the trial could show no meaningful difference.
