New drug aims to keep kidney cancer in check without harsh treatment
NCT ID NCT07023432
First seen May 23, 2026 · Last updated Jun 20, 2026 · Updated 4 times
Summary
This phase 2 trial tests whether the drug belzutifan can control metastatic clear cell renal cell carcinoma in people who are currently just being watched (active surveillance). Researchers will compare belzutifan to continued observation in 78 adults with slow-growing disease who have not had prior systemic treatment. The study also tracks side effects to see if belzutifan is safe enough to use as a first-line option.

What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Belzutifan
What this could lead to
If it works, this could offer a way to delay or avoid more aggressive treatment for people with slow-growing metastatic kidney cancer.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-phase trial, so results may not apply broadly. Belzutifan can cause side effects like anemia or low oxygen, and it may not control the cancer better than simply watching it.
Conditions
