Could a simple blood test predict severe preeclampsia?

NCT ID NCT07265336

First seen Jan 11, 2026 · Last updated Jun 22, 2026 · Updated 30 times

Summary

This study looks at whether a blood gas measurement called base excess differs between pregnant women with severe preeclampsia and those with normal blood pressure. Researchers will test 100 women before delivery to see if abnormal base excess levels are linked to more severe disease. If confirmed, base excess could become a new tool to help predict complications.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

What this could lead to

If successful, this study could help identify a simple blood test marker to predict the severity of preeclampsia, potentially guiding earlier interventions.

What could go wrong

This is an early observational study with only 100 participants, so results may not apply to all patients. The link between base excess and preeclampsia severity is not yet proven.
