Listening to the brainstem: a new window into autism?
NCT ID NCT07743177
First seen Aug 03, 2026 · Last updated Aug 04, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study looks at auditory brainstem evoked potentials (BAEPs) — electrical signals from the brain in response to sound — in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). By comparing these signals to those of children with other neuropsychiatric conditions, researchers hope to identify differences related to age, sex, and symptom severity. The goal is to better understand how the brain processes sound in autism and whether these measures could serve as markers of neural maturation.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only, not medical advice or a prediction.
- What this could lead to
- If successful, this could improve understanding of how the brain processes sound in autism, potentially aiding earlier diagnosis or more tailored support.
- What could go wrong
- This is a retrospective, observational study, so it cannot prove cause and effect. Findings may not apply to all children with autism, and the measures may not clearly distinguish autism from other conditions.
