Brainstem implant offers hope for deaf children without inner ears

NCT ID NCT02310399

First seen Nov 01, 2025 · Last updated Apr 30, 2026 · Updated 29 times

Summary

This study is testing an auditory brainstem implant (ABI) in up to 20 children who are deaf because they are missing their inner ear or hearing nerve. The implant sends sound signals directly to the brainstem, bypassing the ear. Researchers will monitor safety and measure how well children can hear and understand speech over time.
