Can group therapy sharpen focus for adults with ADHD?
NCT ID NCT06604845
First seen Sep 21, 2026 · Last updated Sep 21, 2026
Summary
Many adults with ADHD still struggle with inattention, planning and impulsivity even after medication. Researchers are testing whether group cognitive behavioural therapy helps more than a structured activity group. About 226 adults with ADHD join weekly two-hour sessions for 12 weeks, either CBT or the activity group, and answer questionnaires and cognitive tests before, after, and up to a year later.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only, not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- Group cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT)
- What this could lead to
- If group CBT outperforms the activity group, it could give adults with ADHD a structured, non-drug option for managing inattention, planning problems and impulsivity. It could also help clinicians match people to the type of group support most likely to work for them.
- What could go wrong
- The trial may find that group CBT works about as well as the activity group, as some earlier research suggests. Group therapy also requires regular attendance over 12 weeks, and results may not apply to people with psychosis, intellectual disability or limited Swedish language skills.
