New brief therapy could ease anxiety for veterans without medication

NCT ID NCT04829240

First seen Nov 01, 2025

Summary

This study tested a short, skills-based anxiety program for veterans in primary care. 177 veterans with anxiety symptoms were randomly assigned to either the program or usual care. The program includes up to six 30-minute sessions focused on coping strategies. Researchers measured anxiety severity and impairment at 16 and 28 weeks to see if the program works better than usual care.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Veterans Anxiety Skills Training (VAST) – a brief behavioral therapy program

What this could lead to

If it works, this could offer a practical, non-medication option for managing anxiety in primary care settings, especially for veterans.

What could go wrong

This is a relatively small, completed study with 177 participants. The intervention is brief and may not work for everyone, and results may not apply to non-veteran populations.
