Could antibiotics tame sarcoidosis? new study targets hidden bacteria
NCT ID NCT05291468
First seen Feb 16, 2026 · Last updated May 23, 2026 · Updated 11 times
Summary
This study tests whether a combination of two antibiotics (azithromycin and doxycycline) can reduce inflammation in people with sarcoidosis, a disease that causes tiny clumps of inflammatory cells in organs. The researchers are looking at whether the treatment works better in patients who have a specific bacteria (Cutibacterium acnes) in their affected tissue. 40 adults with biopsy-confirmed sarcoidosis and active inflammation on a PET scan are participating, but the study is no longer recruiting.
