New study aims to curb antibiotic overuse for coughs and colds

NCT ID NCT07359287

First seen Jan 31, 2026 · Last updated May 22, 2026 · Updated 14 times

Summary

This study tests whether a two-part approach—helping doctors communicate about viral infections and having pharmacists check prescription lengths—can reduce how many days antibiotics are prescribed for common respiratory infections like bronchitis, sinusitis, and sore throat. About 4,500 patients from six primary care practices in France will take part. The goal is to fight antibiotic resistance by cutting down on unnecessary or overly long antibiotic treatments.
