ICU muscle loss: amino acid cocktail and cycling show promise

NCT ID NCT04099108

First seen Jan 11, 2026 · Last updated May 23, 2026 · Updated 21 times

Summary

This study tested whether giving critically ill patients extra amino acids through an IV and having them cycle while in bed could prevent muscle loss during their first week in the ICU. Half of the 50 participants received this combined treatment, while the other half got standard care. The researchers measured changes in muscle size and tissue samples to see if the intervention helped preserve muscle mass.
