Summary

This study tested whether taking flaxseed oil capsules (rich in alpha linolenic acid) for 24 weeks could improve blood sugar levels in 94 adults with elevated blood sugar or mild type 2 diabetes. Participants also had their gut bacteria and fatty acids measured. The goal was to see if this natural supplement could help manage glucose and metabolism.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only, not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance
Flaxseed oil (alpha linolenic acid)
What this could lead to
If it works, this could point toward a simple dietary supplement to help manage blood sugar levels in people with prediabetes or mild diabetes.
What could go wrong
This is a small, completed trial with 94 participants. The effect may be modest, and results may not apply to everyone with diabetes.
