Kidney risk after lung surgery: new clues from 150 patients
NCT ID NCT07132619
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study reviewed the records of 150 adults who had surgery to clear blood clots from the lung arteries. Researchers wanted to see who developed kidney injury within two days after surgery and what factors raised that risk. They looked at things like how long the patient was on heart-lung bypass and how low their body temperature was during surgery. The goal is to help doctors identify high-risk patients earlier and improve monitoring after this complex operation.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only, not medical advice or a prediction.
- What this could lead to
- If the findings hold, they could help doctors better predict and monitor kidney problems after this type of lung surgery.
- What could go wrong
- This is a small, single-center, retrospective study, so the results may not apply to all hospitals or patients. It only looks back at past records, so it cannot prove cause and effect.

Who is studied
This study will include adult patients aged 18 to 85 years who underwent pulmonary endarterectomy at the Cardiothoracic Surgery Unit of Kosuyolu Kartal Heart Training and Research Hospital (Kosuyolu KHTRH), a single tertiary referral center in Istanbul, Turkey, between January 1, 2018, and December 31, 2020. Patients meeting the inclusion criteria will have complete perioperative data available, including total circulatory arrest duration and postoperative renal function parameters. Individuals younger than 18 years of age and pregnant women at the time of surgery will be excluded.
