Kidney patients may not need long blood thinners after stents

NCT ID NCT04708587

First seen Jan 18, 2026 · Last updated Jun 22, 2026 · Updated 27 times

Summary

This study compares taking two blood thinners (aspirin plus clopidogrel or prasugrel) for less than 3 months versus at least 6 months after a heart stent procedure in people with advanced chronic kidney disease. Researchers want to see if a shorter course reduces bleeding without increasing heart attacks or strokes. About 900 adults with severe kidney disease are being enrolled.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

aspirin plus clopidogrel or prasugrel

What this could lead to

If it works, this could show that a shorter course of dual antiplatelet therapy is safer and just as effective for people with advanced kidney disease after stenting.

What could go wrong

This is a mid-sized trial, not a large Phase 3 study, so results may not apply to all patients. There is always a risk of bleeding or clotting events regardless of duration.
