Gentle pressure, deep sleep: acupressure shows promise for elderly insomnia
NCT ID NCT07277725
First seen Jan 11, 2026 · Last updated Jun 21, 2026 · Updated 30 times
Summary
This study tested whether acupressure—a gentle finger-pressure technique on specific body points—could improve sleep in elderly people living in care homes. 75 residents took part, with half receiving 12 acupressure sessions over four weeks. The results showed that those who received acupressure reported better sleep quality and less daytime sleepiness compared to the control group. While promising, the study was small and more research is needed to confirm these findings.

What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
acupressure therapy
What this could lead to
If it works, this could offer a simple, drug-free way to help elderly people in care homes sleep better and feel less sleepy during the day.
What could go wrong
This was a small, completed study with 75 participants. The results may not apply to all elderly people, and the benefits might not last long-term. More research is needed.
