Balloon stretch during cancer surgery may prevent stomach paralysis

NCT ID NCT07355374

First seen Jan 23, 2026 · Last updated Jun 14, 2026 · Updated 15 times

Summary

This study tests whether gently stretching the pylorus (the valve between stomach and small intestine) with a balloon during minimally invasive esophageal cancer surgery can prevent a common complication where the stomach empties too slowly. About 116 adults with esophageal cancer will be randomly assigned to receive either the standard surgery alone or surgery plus the balloon stretch. The goal is to see if this simple addition reduces stomach issues, shortens hospital stays, and improves quality of life.
