Wearable tech takes on the myopia epidemic: a School-Based trial
NCT ID NCT07746752
First seen Aug 05, 2026 · Last updated Aug 06, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This trial tests whether a wearable device that tracks and reminds children to spend more time outdoors can help prevent nearsightedness (myopia). Primary school students with adequate hyperopic reserve—a natural buffer against myopia—will be randomly assigned to either a program using smart wristbands to encourage at least 1-2 hours of outdoor activity daily, plus standard eye health education, or education alone. Over 12 months, researchers will measure changes in eye length and refractive error to see if the outdoor activity program reduces the onset of myopia.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- Wearable device-supported outdoor activity program
- What this could lead to
- If effective, this program could offer a simple, scalable way to reduce myopia risk in children, potentially lowering the global burden of nearsightedness.
- What could go wrong
- The trial is relatively small and short-term, and results may not generalize. Adherence to outdoor activity targets could be challenging, and the wearable device's reminders may not be enough to change behavior.
