New heartburn test could replace uncomfortable procedures

NCT ID NCT07437768

First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study tests whether a 4-week course of vonoprazan, a stronger acid blocker, can help identify which patients with persistent heartburn actually have acid reflux. About 100 adults with symptoms that don't improve on standard treatment will take the drug and complete symptom questionnaires. The goal is to see if response to vonoprazan can replace invasive monitoring tests, making diagnosis easier and cheaper.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance
vonoprazan (VOCINTI®)
What this could lead to
If successful, this could offer a simpler, non-invasive way to diagnose acid reflux in patients who don't respond to standard heartburn drugs, reducing the need for uncomfortable tests.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage study with only 100 participants. The results may not apply to everyone, and the test might not clearly distinguish between acid-related and non-acid-related symptoms.
