New study could lift ban on lifesaving malaria drugs for breastfeeding moms

NCT ID NCT07060404

First seen Mar 23, 2026 · Last updated May 01, 2026 · Updated 5 times

Summary

This study looks at whether the malaria drugs primaquine and tafenoquine are safe for breastfeeding mothers and their babies. Currently, these drugs are not recommended for the first six months after birth due to lack of safety data. The study will give the drugs to mothers right after delivery and measure how much passes into breast milk and the baby's blood. It aims to help more women get full treatment for vivax malaria, preventing dangerous relapses and protecting future pregnancies.
